Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps ceased to be a fringe curiosity some time ago. By Sensor Tower’s count, worldwide in-app revenue for the category reached about $700M in Q1 2025, and 49% of it came from the US. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M, while full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Search a store for a short reels app and you will meet at least one of the five names that dominate the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. Superficially, they appear identical: vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting reelshort app behind the paywall. Underneath, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that affect what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

The whole field sits on one screen here, before the rounds begin. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures shown in the US App Store, though they vary by country, platform and promotion. Market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. The Google Play listing of each app provides the install counts. A cell reading « not reported » means no reliable source released the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. Think of the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Owners and Scale

ReelShort, the incumbent, still holds the most weight. Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and supported by China’s COL Group, launched it in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA projects $1.05B, following 2025 revenue of $785M. Singapore’s StoryMatrix operates DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. By Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, though in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. Often mistyped as « dreamwave », DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Operating from Hong Kong, ShortMax appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort holds about 6% and sits just outside this field. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Price

The apps seem most alike in this round. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell an auto-renewing weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store. Beyond that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro », and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. What stands out is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. As prices vary by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may be different. Round winner: DramaWave, whose monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Options

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, per ReelShort’s own blog. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak brings 100+ of them. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is via ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Do not treat look-alike sites, modded APKs or « unlimited coins » generators as a safe shortcut; they are unofficial, so keep away. Winner: clearly ReelShort.

Round 4: Platforms

When it comes to screens, these apps genuinely part ways. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, and progress syncs across devices, and it also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app, while DramaWave’s verified presence consists of its iOS and Android apps. The trump card belongs to My Drama, which has an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. If a shorts app on your phone is all you need, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama claims the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

On raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. More than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets had been produced by the company behind ShortTV as of January 2024 (most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations), and the app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort owns the best-known hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both viral in November 2023. For its part, DramaBox brings an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, simply on volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

DramaWave easily wins this one. Its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. Because it varies more than the prices do, the fine print merits a look too. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable ». On any of these apps, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings rather than deleting it, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, by a distance.

Best For: The Final Verdict

How you watch decides the best choice, since no single short drama app wins every round. When it comes to web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. My Drama is best for Apple TV, since it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. When it comes to free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort is best again, thanks to its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Choose one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
